Press Release: Ronin Arts & Lions Den Press

March 20, 2005. For immediate release and dissemination:

Lions Den Press is pleased to announce the formation of a new partnership with leading electronic publisher Ronin Arts to produce PDF products for D20 fantasy and other RPG lines.

Although Lions Den is a newcomer as a creative studio, its founders are anything but new to the industry. C.A. Suleiman and Ari Marmell have been writing and developing RPGs for years, and have worked for such companies as Green Ronin, Paizo Publishing, White Wolf, Sword & Sorcery Studios, and Wizards of the Coast.

While neither Marmell nor Suleiman intend to cut back on the work they’re doing for other companies, they founded Lions Den Press to be an outlet for products and concepts they could call their own.

Ronin Arts, of course, is one of the most consistently successful electronic RPG publishers to date. Lions Den is thrilled that Phil Reed has agreed to distribute its material, and looks forward to a long and successful partnership.

Out of the gate, Lions Den offers up a number of exciting new products, covering topics from magic items to prestige classes to planar adventures. As the studio progresses, however, its founders intend to narrow their focus to cover organically growing lines of material. You can already see the earliest phases of this in their first releases. Currently, the Lions Den library includes the following:

Desert Heroes: Adventuring in Ancient Egypt? Struggling to survive the coming sandstorm? Desert Heroes is your answer. Written by the creator of Green Ronin’s Egyptian Adventures: Hamumaptra (mentioned favorably in the April issue of Dragon), this PDF provides five desert-oriented prestige classes, ready to be dropped into any campaign. Fully compatible with both existing and forthcoming desert sourcebooks from major publishers, Desert Heroes has the characters you’ll need to tackle the wastelands and survive. Desert Heroes is the first in Lions Den’s brand new Prestige Classes series.

Magical Locks: Why should doors and floors and ceilings have all the fun? This product introduces a dozen mystical locks, each fully designed according to the D20 rules and ready for use in any campaign. From the destructive to the frustrating to the downright bizarre, Magical Locks ensures that “I pick the lock!” is something your players will never again utter without thinking twice.

Planar Factions: A Ronin Arts favorite, and the first product ever released under the Lions Den imprint. Weighing in at over 120 pages, Planar Factions provides a dozen factions and organizations that operate on multiple worlds, and are fully functional whether your campaign focuses on planar travel, or simply acknowledges the existence of other worlds. The Planar Factions can be purchased individually, one organization per PDF, or in a collected omnibus edition. Planar Factions is the first in Lions Den’s ongoing Secrets of the Planes series.

Planar Magic: Put the power of the planes in the palm of your hand! Planar Magic introduces the planar mage, a new 20-level base class whose spellcasting abilities are determined by the plane to which he has chosen to attune himself. Use the planar mage alongside your wizards and sorcerers, or even in place of them. In addition to the class and several supplementary feats, Planar Magic also includes no fewer than 60 new spells. Although designed primarily with the planar mage in mind, these spells are 100% functional even in campaigns that do not focus on or even employ this new class. If you want your magics to have a more planar feel, or are simply looking for something new to offer your sorcerer or wizard, this is the place to look. Planar Magic is the second in Lions Den’s ongoing Secrets of the Planes series.

Give these products a look, and keep an eye out for many more products coming to you in the near future from Lions Den and Ronin Arts. Check us out directly at www.lionsdenpress.com.

Release Schedule?

Do you guys have a release schedule?

I like to know how to plan my spending and having a release schedule to whet my appetite helps do that.

Are you guys going to do regular updates to the PDFs? Are these going to be free updates to people that already purchased the original releases of the PDFs?

Thanks

We do indeed have a pre-planned release schedule, at least for the near future. Our intent is to publish one Lions Den product every couple of weeks, bewteen our other freelancing duties. (We may, should the muse demand, do a bit more now and again, but averaging roughly two/month is the current plan.) For at least the next few months, these PDFs will focus largely, but not exclusively, on four specific lines of products, two of which are already represented in our existing product library.

As far as updates, there are no current plans to update PDFs that are already up. However, if the need to do so arises--due to errors, or the like--we'd certainly do everything we could to ensure that people who already purchased them received the updates for free. (I believe RPGNow has the ability to do so automatically; not sure about the other sites we sell through.)

Incidentally, as far as such errors are concerned, anyone who finds a mistake can report it to us through our contact info on the Lions Den site, or through my e-mail address here on ENWorld. Such help is always much appreciated. :)
