prestige class abbreviations?

Only the DMG and the FRCS have the 3 letter abbreviations for PrC. It's because they wont use PrC's from sources other than those two (FRCS for realms books) for NPC's. ie in an adventure you wont find an NPC with a PrC from Sword and Fist for instance. I guess they'll have to make some up for the PrC they're puting in the Revised DMG.

One list is included in the Dragon magazine writer's guidelines. From there:

Asn = Assassin, Lor = Loremaster, Arc = Arcane Archer, Shd = Shadowdancer, Blk = Blackguard, DEf = Dwarven Defender.

It also has abbreviations for specialist wizards. I'd differ with the preceding poster -- abbreviations do not exist for every prestige class because they're simply not useful. If you attempted to do that you'd need to coordinate every publisher's PRC names to avoid abbreviation conflicts, so at some point no one bothers.

Are you sure he didn't mean that it's strange how he can't find the Abbreviations for the DMG PrCs in the DMG when you can find them in other places like modules and stuff?

Given that there are approximately six zillion PrCs out there (plus or minus two quadroons), I don't think it's feasible to think up abbreviations for all of them. I prefer to abbreviate core classes, but spell out the PrCs:

ftr4/clr5/hospitaller 4

ftr3/rog6/shadowdancer 3

wiz6/guildmage 3

etc.

me too. unless its my own charecter sheet, I don't abrivate. but for NPC's I do, just to be sure I don't mistake the wrong PrC
