Prestige class focusing on item creation?

Happy to help!

Happiest_Sadist, the bonus feats can be any item creation feat.

Dreaddisease, their spells increase every level.

The balance for them is that their feats are focused into item creation. Also, their skill selection is narrowed and focused on their creative and creation-based skills, even as their skill points are expanded. I should maybe cut the spellcasting to every other level in retrospect, or at least lose two or three levels worth though, do you think?

Thanks for the welcome.

I like the Artificer posted as a base, but it doesn't suit the goal the player is working toward (intelligent items). He wants the ability to have greater control over the creation of intelligent items (as well as greater flexibility in the creation of items in general). The rules in the DMG are pretty lame from a player's perspective (pay the amount for the intelligence level you want and roll randomly). It really suggests that an alien intelligence is being bound into the item rather than a new intelligence is being created. I was working through what kinds of spell prerequisites would be necessary in order to guide the intelligence (exactly) and for picking the different abilities. Many of them are easy. The problems come in the requirements for the selection of the feat emulation abilities. Does anyone have any suggestions on that?

I started a new PrC called the Crafter (ooooo how original:D), but it's unfinished.

The Crafter is a special maker of magic. They have an ability to create items that most other casters can only dream of. They have learned the ancient, hidden secret magic that artifacts and relics are imbued with. It is a secret that is thought lost and Crafters would like to keep it that way. Only another Crafter can teach the secret art. It takes at least half a year to begin to learn the art. At the end of the training period, the new Crafter gains enough experience to raise him to halfway beyond his next level (i.e. a 10th level cleric would become a 10 Cleric/1 Crafter with experience halfway to his 2nd Crafter level, or 60,050 exp.).

Prereq.:Knowledge (arcana) 6 ranks, Knowledge (religion) 4 ranks, any spellcaster 8+, any 3 item creation feats.
Special: must be trained for 6 months by another Crafter

Class Skills: Alchemy, Craft, Knowledge (Arcana), Knowledge (Religion), Profession, Scry, Spell Craft, Use Psionic Device, Use Magic Device, Concentration, Decipher Script, Appraise

Skill Points: 4 + Int mod

Wizard BAB and Saves. +1 level of existing class for each level of Crafter.

This is about as far as I got, but I have ideas. Bonus Item Creation feats every 3 levels, starting at 1st.

As for special abilities...
At first level, they get the MoF feat that reduces the exp expenditure for item creation. Later on, they get an improved version of the feat.

They can use UMD during item creation to cast spells they aren't familiar with. This is done on day 1 of item creation, and every day thereafter, a special spell (I don't know, call it Spell Weave) they know, is cast that starts the spell creation for that day. This means that the Crafter can make items without other casters around, and with but one scroll (assuming they make the UMD check).

I haven't figured this out yet, but I also wanted to give them some sort of ability to manipulate the creation of intelligent items. One idea is to give them a bonus of 10 to any rolls on the chart (can use it as a -10 to), and increase this range eventually to 20 or so. That may be too high...like I said, these are ideas at this point...the character I was going to use this PrC for isn't used anymore, so I stopped working on it.

At 10th level, I thought about allowing the Crafter to make ONE item where he could choose a few of the special abilities on the intelligent chart.

What I had a hard time writing up is how to do stuff that's not in the books, like Artifacts. I wanted this PrC to be able to make an artifact, but only one at 10th level. I'll leave this as an exercise for the reader.:D

I had more ideas, but I have since forgotten. Feel free to steal/use any of this if you like it. It's supposed to be a powerful PrC, not something every wizard goes for for the uber benefits. That's why it's kind of hard to qualify for it. Hope this helps.

Just to make a shameless plug :D the netbook of classes contains a number of different versions of an item creation PrC. Each are different and usable by anyone.

Also Monte Cook did 3 PrCs on this subject as a free pdf through a company called Dark Nebulae I believe. If you look through his archives or bio I think you should find the link and the pdf.
