Prestige classes and experience penalties

When a character takes a prestige class, does it operate under the same rules as other multiclassing?

For example, if a Human character has already multi-classed (Fighter 4/Cleric 4) and then decides to take a prestige class (EN Board God 1), is that character then under the 20% experience penalty loss rule?

I personally don't give the multiclass penalty for prestige classes. IMHO they're just a sort of specialization, so i prefer to encourage my players taking a PrC. The rules are a bit obscure on the topic, so every DM can handle them as they want... or at least I think so. If there are somebody here that could clear better than me the rule, I will glady hear some other ideas!

Ok, more precise... :)

DMG page 27 "Prestige Classes" 2nd paragraph 3rd sentence.

Taking a prestige class does not incur the experience point penalties normally associated with multiclassing.

So is there any penalty against advancing in two different prestige classes at the same time, even if there is a difference of multiple levels between them?

Prestige Classes are nice that way. Although I've only seen one character in game that had two prestige classes and was still under 20 levels.

Thanks for the replies

I knew I had seen that somewhere, but didn't know where. Especially grateful for the page, paragraph reference, Thane!
