Prestige classes

I heard from a friend that if a character takes a prestige class he is obliged to take all the levels of that prestige class before returning to his base class or taking another one. I personally beleive that this is not right but i want to hear what you have to say

No, that is not correct in general, but could be someone's House Rule. All it takes is a glance at some character optimization threads to see that at the very least most people don't play this way.

There are a handful that tell you that once you quit the class, you can't go back. Other than that, no.

Did he say, "Obliged" or must?

Obliged just means as a favor to DM you should do it: he owes you if you do.
