Prismatic Wars - Bug or am I just not getting something?

I just tried a battle in Prismatic Wars against the Wandering Trickster NPC. The third move of the game makes no sense to me. I've attached a screenshot of the final board.

The first move was by the NPC in the bottom left. I countered with the card in the bottom right. The NPC then placed a card in the bottom center position and I lost. His card has a value of 1 to its right side. My defending card has a value of 6 to the left. How the heck does that calculate as a loss for me?

3+4 = 1+6

It's the Plus rule, which was in effect in that match.

OK, I would have thought it was 3+1, adding the values facing my card, rather than the values facing each other, then flipping around to use and attack my card.
