D&D 5E Probably the best bet for a 5e Dark Sun is to convince WotC to give it to Ajit George.

Kalakeri, the dread domain of Ravenloft based in India culture, has got a story even this could adapted into a production, maybe something style Castlevania anime to save money with the FXs for an action-live version.

My opinion is the return of Dark Sun would be something Ravenloft, a mixture of spin-off and reboot. The setting wouldn't be only a region, but a complete "wildspace", allowing more creative freedom to add after new elements from future sourcebooks. This "doomspace" would be unlocked in DMGuild, but the original "Athasian tablelands" only would be published for a limited number of profesional publishers, maybe Renegade games or Jetpack7.

Of course WotC could "bury it in the drawer of oblivion" but when there are too many franchises of generic fantasy, they need something different and original. Maybe even Paramount asked the licence to produce an animated miniserie.

I generally think the main reason is that there must be a bunch of tables where it's easier to get a particular game going if there's a shiny new official book supporting it. The table won't play your homebrewed setting, but they'll play the new official hotness.

Not how my groups work, necessarily, although I do think a shiny new book makes some of my groups a little more enthusiastic.
Also it’ll likely open up the DMsGuild

I think Nentir Vale started as Mike Mearls home campaign setting, right?
Nentir Vale started with Rich Baker:
Nentir Vale, by the way, was a very late addition to the 4e DMG. We had that book pretty much done, and at the last minute the brand team and the R&D management team decided that we ought to provide something for novice DMs to use as a starting point. So, I was called in to create a county-sized “sample” world to serve as a chapter in the DMG.

I mean, a DM can make up anything, none of this is "necessary." But after Radian Citadel, I'd love to see what Ajit George would do with just about anything, and tackling an up to date but not bad Dark Sun would be an interesting challenge.
He is good. Which I is why I would rather he tackle an original idea, without the baggage and diverse preconceived visions that come with Dark Sun.

It’s not a zero sum game. My bet is he could still do something like that and DarkSun. I dint think he’s finished with making D&D/RPGs

He could do it. But there is no POINT. There are plenty of other D&D projects he could tackle without without the baggage. How about something new and original? Wouldn't that be a refreshing change?

It doesn't matter how talented the writer, anything that makes fundamental changes to an old setting is going to upset a portion of it's fanbase, whilst being meaningless to players that have no memory of the original.

Well sure.
However.

I saw the last Dragonlance book get torn appart by DL a well known historian and other old guard and even a bit by one of the original novel authors.

That historian then went in to join a game of it and purportedly had a great time.

Then there was the stuff in DMsGuild that was praised by that same historian and a lot of the old guard. Even cool new things for Dragonlance came out.

And Dragonlance had a lot of baggage too.

I mean D&D as a whole is kinda in the same boat.

No, but the production schedule is limited. With six books a year and most slots already decided a few years in advance, it is rather tight. But as you say, there’s also the DM’s Guild.

Here’s to hoping on both counts.

My opinion is to sell more titles in DMGuild WotC needs the setting to be more "sandbox", allowing more space to add more things by the 3PPs. This could be the main reason of the "retouch" of Ravenloft, and maybe they wanted something like this in DS, but the Athasian tablelands were too "small". Other point was the main metaplot was about how to defeat the sorcerer-kings and the rest of defilers. DS needs space to tell other type of stories. Don't use always the same type of villain in all the adventures.

If Paramount wanted an adaptation then you can forget the canon continuity of the novels.

* Other idea is if time-travelers go to the past, a group to kill Rajaat (but it would be useless, because this was only a "puppet" controlled by other) and other to warn him against the betray of the champions.... then a different group of champions are chosen for the cleasing war. Really it was not a little group of champions, but an army of "terminators".

At least a section of DMGuild should be opened for DS art.
