Interesting to compare to some SYG cases. Is threatening with an axe the equivalent shooting warning shots?

Not really. Threatening with an axe poses no risk to people nowhere near the area whereas a warning shot most certainly could.

I'm inclined to think that "warning shots" are merely cover for missing the target initially.
Burglar: Gimme all your money!
Victim: Bang!
Burglar: You missed!
Victim: That was a warning shot!
Burglar: I don't feel warned.
Victim: Bang!
Burglar:...croak...
