Protect yourself against HARM and OTTO'S IRRESISTABLE DANCE?

Almost as significantly, protection from evil has a 1 min/level duration and is a touch spell and consequently can't be made Persistent. Mind Blank has a 24 hour duration.

At epic levels (and indeed, even at mid levels), you don't want to use the first partial action of combat on a 1st level protective spell.

Prot. / evil stops mental control, it does not automatically block all enchntment (compulsion) spells.

That's what Quicken Spell is good for... putting up low level but still useful spells in high level combats!

And here I thought that you used persistent spell and extend spell to have those useful low level buffs up at the beginning of combat and used quicken spell to toss more magic missiles, fireballs, and other mischeif and mayhem causing spells into the fray as quickly as possible (or to strip your foes of their buffs--a high level caster could use a quickened slow, dispel evil, or greater dispelling).

Persistant works, too, of course, but is limited to some specific spells. Protection from Evil cannot be made persistant and has a rather low duration, so Quicken Spell is the better option here.

And Quicken Spell can surely be used both ways, either for more offense, or to not neglect defense.

I think, however, that it is better used for defense, as offensive spells of at least four levels below the maximum spell level you've got tend to be rather useless, really (unless we are talking epic levels, of course).

that's why you use persistent on circle v evil 10'. A nice 24 hour boost for the whole party if they stay within range.

edit for spelling

It turns out I was wrong about Protection from Evil, though. Maybe there's an epic feat? Contingency?

BTW who is the victim? We've all been assuming the victim is a mage, but what can a fighter do?

One of the best defenses against Harm is the Remain Conscious feat. Let's you make a partial action every round until you have -10 hit points.

How is that a good defense against Harm? By the time you are fighting 11th level clerics, I'm sure they can follow their harm up with more than 14 points of damage to finish you off. The best defense against Harm is heal, or house rules.
