Protection against glitterdust?

Uhhmmm...unless there has been errata to deal with this. But a successful Will save will prevent blindness. It is a 2nd level spell. So the Will save shouldn't be too bad.

The major thing is...keeping creatures from hiding or hiding in plain sight with the -40 penalty. Which is stiinking awesome.

Thanks for the replies.

I do realize it's only a phase, where the wizard can affect the monsters due to his DC on glitterdust being 19 atm, ending on a 21 eventually. Still, at this level (7), most NPC's / monsters he encounters, have some problems making the save regularly. It's no biggie, I was just curious if I had missed something. Which I had. Somehow I had it in my head that a potion of remove blindness wouldn't remove the blindness of glitterdust.. /bonks self

must. drink. less. ;)

Cheers

If his DC is 19 at level 7 then he is likely getting +2 to his DC from feats, with a headband of intellect as well. That's a substantial investment, which ought to be worth something special.

DC 19 is really high for that level.

10-base
04-Int bonus
01-Spell Casting Prodigy
01-Spell Focus (Conjuration)
01-Greater Spell Focus (Conjuration)
02-Level of the Spell
---
19-Total DC

That's a lot of investment he's put into the Conjuration school, and there should be some reward for that.

I'll be the first to admit that Glitterdust is utterly broken, and imo, one of the most powerful spells in the game. My DM mitigated it by making monsters with increased Will saves, Globe of Invulnerability, and my favorite, NPCs who wore goggles. When they got Glitterdusted, they simply flipped the goggles up to their foreheads and continued fighting. I still disagree with that, but what are you going to do?

The other issue is that this is not a temporary problem. When he gets Heightened Spell, he can jack the DC of Glitterdust up to his highest level of spells. Sure, he loses the 4th or 5th level slot for the day, but most of those spells don't even have the raw power of Glitterdust. On my wiz I'm using Heightened Glitterdust for 2 of my 6th level spells, and it works like a charm.

In any case, good luck on fixing this. Some have suggested to change it to a Ref save, and I agree with this approach, though it really doesn't help an incredible amount. Our current DM hates the spell and is considering outright banning it, but I don't think this is the best approach. Your fix needs to have subtlety and not be a universal ban hammer.

Good luck,
Krensus

Yes

20 int
spell focus 1&2 = DC 19 on glitterdust. He also has heighten spell already, so I assume it's a problem that will persist :)

Either way, I am all good with it, and so far, I haven't taken any special measures to ensure the foes can counter it. I merely asked, because once in a while, I might want someone to be able to negate/avoid etc, (assuming he misses his save ofc), and I wanted to make sure I had a complete list of options.

I am not in any way planning to "nerf" my player's choices, since I helped him build the sucker..

Not sure why you'd want to put a stop to this anyway. To me its exactly like saying "I have a fighter in my game that keeps hitting people with his battleaxe. What can I do to stop that?"

Glitterdust is a good spell that will become less effective as he goes up in levels. For now, instead of coming up with a way to nerf or counter Glitterdust, just have the next badguy cast Glitterdust on HIM! Balance restored and you don't have to re-write the rules.

The spell's 10-ft. radius spread isn't all that big. Space the NPCs / monsters out a bit, and he'll only be able to take down a few of them. (He should be taking down a few of them.)

Also: occasionally, blind monsters like grimlocks, oozes, canoloths, etc. :)

No, it's more like "I have an enlarged fighter in my game that keeps improved tripping people at range with his spiked chain." And, there are plenty of people who have nerfed/banned spiked chains.

It doesn't become less effective. The DC will continue to increase on par with Good saves and better than Poor saves. Please tell me what level spell is a limited duration mass blindness that can go around corners (not targeted).
