Protection from Evil stops any attempt to "excercise mental control" over the creature. So any spell with "mind-affecting" would be stopped by PfE. This includes Charm Person and Suggestion.

Not according to the FAQ: according to the FAQ, it stops all spells of the charm subschool and any compulsion spells that give continuous control over the victim.

Personally I think this is dumb, so I allow it to stop all (and only) spells with the [compulsion] descriptor.

I asked Andy Collins about this and he said that the 3.5e description was clearer on this issue... so it might be worth asking on one of those threads if you've any likelihood of transferring to 3.5e in whole or part.

Stupid FAQ.

You've got PfE, so I can't make you think I'm your friend. But I can use Suggestion or Geas on you just fine, 'cos they're not "mental control" like Charm Person is.

Bah.
