PS3 vs BluRay player

First Post
Hi folks,
Now that the format war is over I'm looking at buying an HD movie player.

What I've noticed and what confuses me as a consumer is that the PS3 is either the same price or cheaper than a BluRay player.

I have two questions for anyone who plays movies on their PS3.
1. Are there any specific advantages that a BluRay player would have over a PS3?
2. Does a PS3 do the "upconversion" that most BluRay players boast so that my regular DVDs will look better?

Thanks all

The only one I can think of is that the remote wouldn't have to be Bluetooth. The PS3 is future-proof and reads the discs better than any other BR on the market, right now.

Yup. Upconverts DVDs. They still won't look as good as BR movies (actually, not even close) but it will do it.

1) At this point, unlikely. With the PS3 you get movies + games. So, if the price is similar, why not go with the one that gives you both? Once the price starts to drop then maybe. Blu-Ray playback isn't an after thought. It's part of what a PS3 was designed to do and IMO it does it very well.

Of course I haven't actually seen a Blu-Ray player in use, so I'm just guessing.

2) Yes. I haven't done an actual comparison, but they do seem to be nicer than on a regular DVD player.

I honestly didn't even realize that Blu-Ray players existed outside of the PS3. 3's have dropped to $400 now, how much do Blu-Ray players go for?
