Psi alternatives: gnome cantrips, ranger spells, etc.

Looking for input from those of you who have experimented with campaigns that use psionic powers instead of magic spells. This has been discussed before, but I'd like to revist it, please:

Have you been able to make a full transitition, or have you needed to maintain some magic elements? For example, an even swap between psion and wizard/sorcerer is simple enough. We can even set aside the issue of clerics and their spell-like miracles -- gawd works in mysterious ways, psionic or not. But I'm not so sure about rangers and druids. And magic monsters.

In a related question, I'm trying to decide how to fairly adapt a beginning level gnome adventurer who is a natural psionic and doesn't have any access to his three 0-level race illusions. Should he get a psi ability substitution?

Well Rangers, Druids and Paladins (if you use them) are all divine casters like the Cleric so I don't see any reason to treat them differently, they all get their abilities from a higher power after all.

As for the gnome, swap the spells for something similar or convert them into powers (Bruce has suggestions for doing so in ITCK). Or just leave them be and treat them as psionics (give them displays change the names if you want). They can only be used onced per day, so there's not much of a difference to begin with.
