I'm still unable to connect, using port 6668.. but no problems in the lower sequence ports (6660, 6661, 6662)

Yes, but yesterday's was the largest in the last 18 months.

Edited to add that is was a worm that attacked the SQL Server monitor port.

For self-replicating attackers, it isn't so much a matter of getting many people together in a massive organized effort as it is a matter of a few people being slightly more clever in coding. From what I've been told, this attack was not "larger", it was "better".

My bot is logged in on port 6666 as we speak.

Like the server was rebooting heh.

As a recommendation, use Ports 6660 or 6666 to connect for the moment.
