Is it okay to create a thread about "intelligent design"? It claims to be science...

I would vote no. It's a religious topic that shouldn't be approached with a 42.5' pole on this board.

First question: Is this about a thread already existing on these forums, or is it one you want to create?

Second Question: In your opinion, does it seem very likely to lead directly to discussion of real-world politics or religion? If so, it might be a better idea not to create it.

You can post anything you want, of course -- we just may need to close or delete it if it's inappropriate or causes a flame war. Sorry I an't be more specific, it really depends on the thread itself, as you know.

Because I study science, I am interested in the ENW members view on the scientific method. Intelligent design is interesting because, unlike astrology and numerology (etc), it's fairly new and it claims to be science. I don't really care about what intelligent design "is", I am more interested in discussing what it's "not".

I think a discussion of "intelligent design" would veer into religion and politics almost immediately. I'd say more, but it would involve religion and politics, so I'll refrain.

I can understand that urge. I can see paths fo discussion taht can keep ID from becoming a religious discussion, but it would be difficult for folks to stick to them. And while it can be a non-political discussion as well, current events make a turn in that direction dreadfuly likely. While it can be an interesting topic for discussion, a thread here is not a good idea.

Never to be the one throwing a wet blanket on lively debate, I just think there have to be other places better suited to such a discussion. That topic is pretty far afield for an rpg board. Unless, of course, you're talking about building a campaign world.

I would recommend that you didn't.

1) ENworld isn't a particularly good place to have that discussion anyway - it isn't really RPG related after all and I'm sure that this is being discussed in many places on the net right now - a quick google on the key terms you mention provides a lot of links.

2) It will probably cause bad feeling and involve religious discussion including heated tempers and hurt feelings within the first page or so(!)

I do appreciate the fact that you've asked about it here first rather than just diving straight in!

IME, this is quite true. Intelligent design theory, in and of itself, is not religious or political, although, like other scientific theories, can be construed by folks on both sides to have religious and/or political implications. I doubt seriously there are a sufficiently small number of posters around here who could keep the necessary distinctions clear. The thread would become hostile, and then locked.

Heck, even the title to this thread indicates at least a minor degree of hostility.
