Pulp Cthulhu no longer d20

PULP CTHULHU presents background and adventures for the decade of the 1930s, melding the classic Chaosium CALL OF CTHULHU setting with the new CALL OF CTHULHU d20 rules from Wizard's of the Coast.

Wow. It looks like the d20 rules were the whole reason this product was even planned. Anyway, a '30s setting book sounds pretty cool in its own right.

It was targetted as a more combat-heavy setting in order to lure in more D&D players. Of course, Chaosium dithered until their license with WotC expired. I think they really missed an opportunity for some wonderful cash flow and product support. It's too bad.

I saw Jeff Tidball at a wedding last weekend. Maybe I can see if he knows what the scoop is on this product.

Meh. If I die tomorrow never having played CoC (any ruleset), I have no regret. Chaosium can do whatever they want.

So what game would you have regrets about not playing if you did die tomorrow? I can see it on your tombstone now.

IF I HAD ONLY PLAYED HARN ONCE BEFORE THE END! ;)

It looks like the much pushed back Pulp Cthulhu d20 has been changed to a stand alone BRP book with no d20 content. Surprise, Surprise!

Boy this is the last straw for me. I am not going to buy another Chaosium product. As if I could find one of their products at my gaming store to begin with. Their total non-support of Cthulhu d20 makes me sick. You would think that they would have at least tried to capitalize on the great WOTC Cthulhu d20 book. But they are not known for doing the right thing. Sinking a ton of money in a CCG for one.
Of course, you do realize that there're a lot of people who think taking the time and effort to do D20 System stuff for CoC was a slap in the face to their fans, right? They're probably cheering that Pulp Cthulhu won't have all that pagecount wasted on D20 System stats. You can't please all the people all the time, but neglecting your existing market in the hopes of creating a new one is a pretty risky gamble--i'm just glad they survived it.

There goes the last shred of interest I had in Pulp Cthulhu.

Perhaps instead I'll spend my money on that "The End" monograph that I already downloaded when it was available for free on the writer's website...

(*sigh* sometimes I really miss the eye roll smiley)

Isn't that Chaosium's official company motto?

How exactly was the existing market neglected? Are the hard core fans really that excited about another in a long line of reprints of existing material that they'll get instead?

IMO "Survived" is far too strong a word for Chaosium's current state of affairs

If the existing market for Call of Cthulhu were that great, Chaosium wouldn't be in such dire straights.

They need to expand the market.

BRP isn't a terrible system, but it's old, and frankly, it's age shows quite badly. I realize that the people at Chaosium have a huge chip on their shoulder and look down on d20 (they've literally said so), even though BRP is nothing more than original D&D with a 100% skill system. But they need to overlook that bias.

I'm not saying they should completely drop the system. But why not dual stat? It really doesn't take that much room. Heck, why not tri or quad stat? Chaosium should work their contacts and try to get the rights to use other cinematic systems for Pulp Cthulhu - D6 and Savage Worlds leaps to mind.

Hmmph. I am trying to start a pulp era game using both d20 Modern and Adventure! rules. Had a d20 Pulp Cthulhu been available, I would have gotten it, even if only for background material. I have been looking on their web site to see when the San Fransisco source book would finally be coming out, because I wanted that as well. I have too many other things to do with my gaming time to waste any of it converting from another system to the system I use. D20 may be far from perfect, but it works.

If this is how Chaosium treats their customers, I am glad thay had not yet gotten any money from me, now it looks like they never will.
