D&D 5E Punching up Way of the Four Elements monk?

I thought I saw some talk on these monks.. somewhere, but can't find a thread now. Essentially, they feel kind of lackluster - they get four elemental spells, essentially - and web-digging suggests that they might've been more interesting in the playtest. Was curious if anyone has played with one, or what houserules/designs might be out there for making them more interesting.

I feel like building off of Shape of the Flowing River and Water Whip might be a good start.

Water Whip and Fist of Unbroken Air are basically the same, so maybe do a similar thing with Fangs of the Fire Snake and an earth-related attack (basic earthbender stuff with stomping and making earth rise up under an enemy, or popping up a boulder and kicking it at someone).

That puts Shape of "whatever" abilities in a weird spot, though. Shaping earth would be really powerful, even if you limit it to just dirt and not rock or worked stone; pretty easy to open a pit under someone, and then close it over them. I'm not really sure what useful things you could do with shaping fire or air that's not an attack. Air.. you could use to help things glide? Cool down an area? Maybe fire would help in crafting disciplines (blacksmith, kiln.. ovens?).

This is making me think of ways to use Shape of the Flowing River in obnoxious ways. Carry an urn of water on your back so you always have a supply (and aim to find a decanter of endless water as soon as possible!). Hold a bunch of water over an opponents' head in order to drown them. So maybe shaping earth isn't as overpowered as it seemed at first, just.. same-powered. ;P
