In the spirit of the guy who said Ico - here are some extraordinarily worthy but somewhat unknown games.

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is a tactical RPGers dream. Similar in some regards to FF Tactics, only it's undeniably bizarre and hilarious. Featuring 2D sprites with 3D environments a-la Final Fantasy Tactics, gorgeous "old-school" graphics, and a fantastic and original story featuring a main character who's trying to take down the demons trying to steal his birthright to the throne of the netherworld. Oh, you also get to fight evil penguins. And if you're an obsessive player you won't be disappointed: I have no idea how many figures the character's levels can reach -it's definitely in the thousands.

Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution and Guilty Gear X2 are excellent excellent fighting games with polar opposite philosophies. Sega's Virtua Fighter line has always prided itself on verisimilitude rather than cheesy fireballs, and now the best game of the franchise is available for $20. The system is deceptively simple: only three buttons and the directional pad control the characters, but each character has dozens of -sometimes subtly different- martial arts moves, and many distinct styles are emulated

Guilty Gear X2 is amongst the most beautiful 2D game ever, hands down. The characters and fighting is unbelievably over-the-top, and it's animated so well it looks like you're playing a cartoon. Frenetic action, 20 playable characters, science-fiction/fantasy-anime character designs, famous Japanese voice actors, and a guitar-rock soundtrack flesh out the package.

Rez! The synesthetic trance-shooter game. There's not much to say about it - simple and good.

ummm Ico again!

More popular games:
Devil May Cry: How did people forget this one! It's marked down to 20-dollah now! Do not ever ever ever ever touch the sequel though. It was made by another development team.

PS1 Games:
Valkyrie Profile and Vagrant Story are two of the best games to come out for Playstation. You've got your God collecting the souls of fallen warriors to fight in Ragnarok, and your medieval/renaissance-ish special agent, or riskbreaker, in a politically and religiously charged thriller and dungeon crawl. Yay for Fantasy Angst!

Don't forget your Xenogears, the ambitious, eclectic, and some would say superior 'prequel' to PS2's Xenosaga part 1 (I think Xenogears is episode 5 of 6). You can't beat Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

Namco's Tales of Destiny 2 (Tales of Eternia, in Japan) is good for an action-rpg hybrid that doesn't go the venerable way of Zelda. It has a kind simple story - but Gameplay has real depth.

Word! Sorry to revive this thread but I'd love to hear more opinions or answer any questions about these games.
