Question about Apprentice levels & multiclass restrictions

mooby

First Post
It's listed in the DM's Guide that a character can choose to play "apprentice level" at first level, basicalling being a multi-classed character to start.

I was wondering: How do Multi-Class restrictions play into this? I'm talking about how the Paladin and the Monk class can't advance in their respective classes if they take a level in another class.

So, could an apprentice level Sorc/Pal ever add any levels to the Paladin class after advancing to 1/1 (Character Level 2)?

If you can add levels, can you still use the Paladin's more favorable Hit Die and Skill list at apprentice level?

As a DM, my ruling would be yes, as long as...

If you can add levels, can you still use the Paladin's more favorable Hit Die and Skill list at apprentice level?

... you didn't do that.

My interpretation is that essentially, your 'primary' apprentice-level class is your 'first level', and your 'secondary' class is your 'second level'. AS long as Sorcerer is your primary class, then at third level, no problem taking another level of Paladin. But if Paladin is your primary class, then at level 2, you've 'strayed from the path'.

What Hypersmurf said. The end result of using apprentice levels is exactly the same as if you had taken the primary class as your 1st level and the secondary class as your second level.

Lacking in realism? If your character concept is for a multiclass character like a fighter/mage, it's more realistic to start off with the abilities of both classes rather than being a fighter that suddenly learns to cast spells at second level.

In a FR campaign you can be part of one of the paladin orders that allows multiclassing with various other classes, the same holds true for monks.

Otherwise I agree with what has been stated above.
