Question About Flyby Attack and AoO?

Does the Flyby Attack feat provoke an AoO?

I would assume to get the attack in you would have to pass trough threatened squares.

Does the flyby attack feat intend to function like Spring Attack?

If you had Spring Attack could you basically do the same thing as Flyby Attack and not provoke the AoO (if it allows for one)?

If your movement does, yes.

Unless you have reach.

Nope.

Well, since Spring Attack doesn't let you fly... ;) Just kidding, but no. If you're flying, you need Flyby Attack.

I kind of wonder what you're basing that on. I see nothing in the description of Spring Attack that limits it to ground movement. I'd allow it to be used with flying movement.

Flyby attack is limited in that it only works when flying and in that it does not provide protection from AoOs. On the other hand, you can use it with *any* action that allows movement, such as ranged attacks, spellcasting and breathing flames. It is also a lot easier to get, since you don't need Dodge, Mobility and BAB +6 first.

I see nothing in the description of Spring Attack that says you can't fly either, so I suppose you can fly. Also, since I see nothing in the description of Flyby Attack that says you do provoke an attack of opportunity for movement, then I guess you don't. ;)

From a logical standpoint, I really can't visualize "springing" in the air. However, if I ignore the "Spring" in Spring Attack, then there really shouldn't be any reason why it wouldn't also apply in flight. So, it's just a matter of me getting past the "spring" part. I believe someone emailed the Sage about Spring Attacking during flight but I don't remember what the response was.

No, check the Fly spell description.

No, check the Flyby Attack description. It doesn't work with magical flight in the first place.
