Question About Maximize Spell

The feat can be interpreted to say that, but the example of how it works, listed in the feat description in the PHB, would indicate otherwise.

Let's face it: there's rules lawyers (who make sure that rules which are in their favor aren't forgotten/misinterpreted/nerfed), and those are obnoxious. And then there's munchkins (who make sure that rules ARE forgotten/misinterpreted/nerfed in their favor). You seem to have a slight case of the latter going on in your group.
