question about prerequisites

ok I realise this is probably a completely dumb question but-
In order to take a prestige class does the character have to have all of the requirements Before he can take the PrC?

For example, say a PrC has a prereq of BAB+6
and
a rank of 8 in (some skill)

Now, do they have to already have that BAB and skill rank before they can take the Prc?
Or
Can they take the PrC If taking it will give them the requirements. (i.e. taking the PrC puts their BAB at +6 and enough skills to have the rank of "8" in the req skill.)

Sorry this is a goofy question, it is just unclear to me.
I can see it either way and I don't buy many of the so called "splat books" so I don't have a lot of books with this kind of info.
Of all places I looked in the DMG  and I didn't find anything helpful about this in there.
Maybe I completely missed it-?

Thank in advance!

beforehand

You need to have the BAB +6 and Skill of 8 before you take the class. IE a fighter 6 and then the prestige class at level 7.

Just to add a bit more (yes, you need the prerequisites completed before you can select to take a level in the class).

This has come up before and we (general players) are referred (by the sage, customer service, etc.) back to the section on going up in level. It specifically has the ordered list in which you do things to advance a level/class. Choosing the class is first on the list for a reason thus you must meat all the prerequistes before you get your first level in said class.

excellent, :)

Initially I did figure that you had to meet the prereqs first, since they are called Prerequesits.
But then some of my players seemed to think it worked the other way and since sometimes they are referred to as "requirements" there seemed to be some "wigleroom" there.

But I agree with you guys that you must qualify Beforehand.

Thanks for the info!!
;)
