My group has a beguiler that wants to know how strong this spell is against his magics. It means enchantments and compulsions that are ongoing, would something like charm person apply? Can you give some examples of enchantments and compulsions that would not be affected by prot from evil?

It protects against "mental control" by stopping:
1. enchantment (charm) effects
2. enchantment (compulsion) effects that grant the caster ongoing control over the subject
So, charm person falls under 1, thus it is blocked. Dominate person is in the second category and thus blocked. Confusion is an enchantment (compulsion) effect, but it is not ongoing and thus not blocked.
The usual debate on this point is that some try to lump the clause that qualifies point 2 with point 1.
