Question about Sorcerer/Wizard lvls

The_lone_gunman

First Post
Do these lvls stack for the purposes of determining dmg of a spell:

Example:

Wizard2/Sorcerer6

Casts fireball from sorcerer spell list, does it do 6d6 or 8d6.

I would like to know where in the rules does it specifically say that these do or do NOT stack. I was under the impression that they did not, and if that is the case, would like to clarify this for the party wizard. The text in the PHB is rather vague (at least the text I found).

Thanks!

No. It's generally a bad idea to multiclass two spellcasting classes, unless you really want lots and lots of low-level spells.

I agree 100% Hong, but I am looking for the "official" rules on it. Chapter and verse if you have it pls :). I need to explain this to another player but have been unsuccessful in my search for the rule in the book.

The "chapter and verse" you are looking for is just the general rule that you don't stack abilities from different classes, unless it specifically says otherwise. To put it another way, there's no rule that says you DO stack these caster levels, and therefore you don't stack them.

Actually I found the answer from the SRD:

Spellcasting classes
Spells: The character gains spells from all his or her classes. Keep all spell lists separate. Spell levels and spells per day are not aggregated

Thanks anyway! I knew it had to be stated somewhere.

Oh, well, I knew that, of course. I was just testing you.

Yeah, that's it. :)

Note that sorcerer and wizard levels do stack to determine his familiar's natural armor, Int, and special abilities (PH, page 56). This, of course, implies they do not stack in other ways. :D
