Question about waking up

i have seen people sleep thru trumpet practice, we had a guy in our campaign who used 3 and 4 alarm clocks in college and still had trouble getting up....may tie in post wake-up reaction time to con bonus???

Trust me, if the yell had been "Fire!" he would have gotten up.

We have had silly situations where one guy was sleeping thru 4 rounds of combat. Seems impossible to me. Someone can wake up and take a long time to react... thats fine... but not to sleep thru heavy combat.

Thats only 24 seconds. I can believe it.

I have people make listen checks every round at -20. If they succeed, they get to act in the next round. Of course, the DC is usually -10 or -15, so it's not that hard. They can also get a feat that cuts the penalty to -10.

I've personally slept through an earthquake. There are stages of sleep from which it's just hard to wake up.

Well, if don't have someone on watch, you don't wake up or wake up in chains. :)

There are skills and feats that I try to use, such as Listen, Senses, Alertness against a DC. If failed the player comes awake flat footed.

Now if someone had told you there was going to be an earthquake ... do you think you wouldnt have woken up ? Its one thing to sleep in a comfy bed in a safe house. Quite another to sleep half worried about a possible ambush.

You can talk about taking a long time to GET UP or to DRAW a weapon. But half a minute snooring in the middle of combat !

In real life I'm an expert on sleep and alertness - and in my opinion, there are some thing you just shouldn't worry about simulating in your fantasy game. If a house rule doesn't make the game more fun, there isn't much point to it. :)
