Question for Shark

Greetings!

Lone Gunman, what kinds of ideas would you like to incorporate in a mass combat system? Do you want something more in line with a mineatures game, or do you want something more abstract?

Greetings Shark!

First of all thank you very much for your detailed reply. I will definately be incorporating several of your ideas into my campaign.

What I am basically looking for, is not necessarily a "miniatures wargame" version of D&D, but some sort of system that allows the PC's to actually make decisions that have a long term effect on the battlefield. I would like them to be part of the battle plan, and then once the battle begins, to have a way that their decisions can shape what their army will do in response to the enemy. I also don't want it to bog down the story part of the game.

This major battle is several months off, but it will be the culmination of my group's "non-epic" campaign. They will be around 18-20th lvl, and basically put in charge of a large portion of the North's defense. They will have their own portion of the defense force under their direct command, and I want a smooth and easy way for them to direct their troops strategically, while we switch back to the tactical versions that we play out as standard D&D combat.

I will take a peek at the Quintensential fighter's mass combat system, perhaps it will suit my needs.

Once again, thanks for your inputs, your campaign ideas give me inspiration!

Greetings!

Hey Lone Gunman! You're quite welcome my friend! I'm sincerely gratified that you find my commentary and ideas so inspiring! I am glad to help in any small way that I can.

Mass combat can at times be difficult, as few have seriously tried to make up a system for it, because they are more focused, I think, on making up some kind of money-making monstrosity rather than just making up a system that works smoothly and elegantly for a roleplaying game. That is why I have a customized system, mixed somewhat with the simple system that Mongoose has in the Quintessential Fighter. It didn't really cost any money, though it cost a few pages of paper, and maybe 3-6 hours of careful thought or so.

I hope your game works out well! It sounds very fun!

Is the system in Mongoose's Quintessential Fighter open gaming content? And could anyone give a quick run-down of how it works?

Do you have those few pages typed up, SHARK?

Hello SHARK

Have you ever considered to roll three dice and use the median roll instead?

It seems like your sysem is has some relation to the GURPS Mass combat system found In GURPS Companion i or II.

Your system of resolving this battles i would find also very interesting.
