Price matters to an extent.

Take for example, cars.

Say you paid $100,000 for a car. You'd be upset if you got a Yugo for that much money.

OTOH, if you got a Yugo for free, you might be happy, but that still wouldn't make it a great car.

Price is always important. You buy a product because you want to satisfy a need (though you may not be aware of the exact need yourself). The degree of satisfaction you receive divided by the expectations of satisfaction you had, determines the degree of satisfaction you receive. The price are willing to pay will mostly be linked to your expectations - eg. you'll be more likely to pay a high price for a product you expect a lot of - so saying that the price is not essential to the evaluation of a product is obviously nonsensical...
