Question re: Psionics Books

Hi all,

Simple question:

What psionics books do I need to use them in a D&D V3.5 game?

I apologize if this sounds foolish, but I've not gotten into the psionics stuff before. I notice there are at least three books out there:

Psionics Handbook (2001)
Expanded Psionics Handbook (2004)
Complete Psionics (2006)

I am guessing that the Complete Psionics is the updated "current" version, but are the other two books necessary or can I disregard them completely.

Thanks in advance.

The Psionics Handbook (2001) has been completely supplanted by the Expanded Psionics Handbook (2006).

Complete Psionics is a psionics splatbook that adds onto the Expanded Psionics Handbook.

You only need the Expanded Psionics Handbook.

Expanded Psionics Handbook (2004)

That's all you need. Complete Psionics is just gravey and the Psionics Handbook is outdated crap.

www.d20srd.org go to the psionics section. This is the legal free rules materials WotC provided from the XPH.

I use that instead of the books. I have played two psionic characters using the 3.5 psionics rules and used psionic monsters in my 3.5 campaign.

It will give you the mechanics of the powers and classes and really cool feats, but no pictures, no githX and no mindflayers which WotC kept proprietary.

I'd suggest reading the free rules and seeing if you like them before buying the book.

Other books you can add;

Hyperconsciouus
This both new material and updated material from the other Malhavok psionic books and adds some interesting powers and ideas such as Dream Stained items and Mindscape mental combat.

Untapped Potential
This is a new pdf. book that I am still playing with, but it does have several very good parts to start with. Racial Paragon levels for Psionic races, a few new classes, the Devoted Psion is a true specialist and it introduces Crystalics, psionic crystal grafts.

And also check out The Mind's Eye over at the WotC website for a bunch of free Psionic articles.

If you want the basic rundown free of charge, I'd suggest the SRD referenced above. It will give you the core classes, the feats, the expanded skill sections (concentration does even more for a Psion than a wizard!) and the Psionic Powers.

If you like what you see, there's nothing quite like the actual book in your hands to study more carefully. Complete Psionics is not liked by a lot of Psionics lovers for some of its classes and powers, but it does contain the errata for many of the rules.
