Question regarding Ring of Wizardry

We just came across a Ring of Wizardry in our campaign. There's a character built as a Beguiler/Wizard/Ultimate Magus who wants it.

Since he has two arcane casting classes, and the ring says that it doubles the wearer's arcane spell slots of a given leve (2nd in this case), we have to ask: Will it affect spell slots in both of his casting classes, or just in one?

The DMG and SRD aren't clear.

i would have it affect all pools of spell slots.

if you are worried about it, i would use this opportunity to introduce the rule about curses / flaws in magic items that everyone seems to ignore (dmg 272). there is a 5% chance for all magic items to have something from a minor flaw up through a major curse. it is given as an optional rule. most of them are merely inconvenient. but it can also add interest and spice to an item. for example, if it requires something quirky like the blood of a living enemy to activate for the day, or a complete stranger has to sing a song with you while you hold it....

i always enjoyed magic items having quirky drawbacks in my game play, it is sad to see it be lost from most people's d&d.

This special ring comes in four kinds (ring of wizardry I, ring of wizardry II, ring of wizardry III, and ring of wizardry IV), all of them useful only to arcane spellcasters. The wearer’s arcane spells per day are doubled for one specific spell level. A ring of wizardry I doubles 1st-level spells, a ring of wizardry II doubles 2nd-level spells, a ring of wizardry III doubles 3rd-level spells, and a ring of wizardry IV doubles 4th-level spells. Bonus spells from high ability scores or school specialization are not doubled.
It looks like it doubles "wearer's arcane spells per day". So if the wearer has two (or more) pools of arcane spells then they should all be doubled.

If they have multiclassed in such a way that this is true then be glad they don't get access to the higher spells and don't have a ring of wizardry for said spells. In this case though it looks like all arcane classes apply, not just one class.

Also, Greenfield, I know you have a certain style so I could see you disliking this answer - even though it is the most correct I see - so try talking to the person and seeing if they are okay applying the ring only to one class as it was likely never intended to be used for multiple classes at once and could possibly be quite game breaking that way.

I appreciate the concern for my "certain style", and it's true that I shy away from power-gaming.

I have no feeling one way or the other on this item though.

Here's a secondary question: Presume that the wearer has something like a 24 in their casting stat, which (I believe) gives 2 bonus spells per day for 1st and 2nd level. Would a Ring of Wizardry II double these bonus spell slots as well?

No. That's explicit in the description. Bonus spells from high stats and school specialization are not doubled.
