Question regarding swarms

usually a single swarm occupies a 10x10 space, iirc. so are you facing one giant sized swarm bigger than that, or are you facing multiple swarms? if the latter, i think it is an easy answer.

if the former, then i think that the portion knocked back would effectively split the swarm into three smaller swarms, the portion on either side of the gust, and the portion dispersed by the wind.

The swarm(s) cover an area big enough to reach from ground level up to 60 feet high in the trees.

Fortunately, the Flaywind Burst spell is a 60 foot cone, so depending on the range I fire from, I can get most or even all of them in the blast.

But since Swarms are usually, as noted, 10 feet on a side, and I'm facing several to make up that kind of volume, I expect that I'll probably be getting partial impact on several of them. In fact, it would be hard not to.

I bounced this off my DM, by E-Mail, so he won't be caught cold by the approach. It seems only sporting.

Besides, ambushing the DM is a tactic that only works once. Per character, that is.

indeed. i can attest to that.

reminds me of a character i had that managed to pull off the rather unusual feat of facing down a full adult blue dragon, almost single handed. (had the defensive back up of a wizard and a cleric, but they couldn't affect the dragon, only me.) here is the link. the finale is about three to four posts down from that one.

after the dust settled around my victorious character, i was politely informed by the dm that my victory was due to the ONE-TIME inspiration of the GODS, and if i were to attempt such a feat again, it would likely be not such a fortuitous outcome. (to be fair, he did make me roll about three or four checks just to see if it would work without backfiring on me, and if it actually worked against the dragon or not. )
