Quick deaths in D&D

My first ever D&D experience when I was at school was a homebrew AD&D game. The other players had played before, and they needed a rogue/thief to complete their group. OK, I said full of enthusiasm, and duly roll up a character with few enough HP that the first room we enter, I get bitten BY A RAT and fall over, dead.

Put me off for a while, and I haven't played a rogue since. :D

The first time I ever "played", in 5th grade, my elf whatever (fighter?) lasted about two rooms and then there where ghouls...too many ghouls...I lasted the longest of course, but not long enough.

It was sort of a play date (though we did not use that term back then) with kids I didn't know well, and I think the older one who DMed really just wanted to get it over with to watch Dirty Harry on TV.
