Hi guys,

If I want to deal subdual damage (unarmed) with my Monk, do I suffer the -4 penality to my attack roll ?

Thanks

No you do not. Read the PHB section on grappling. Normal PCs and monsters take a -4 penalty if they want to deal "normal" damage, otherwise it is subudal. Monks may deal either normal or subdual damage w/o penalty.

The way I read that section seemed to indicate that only in a grapple could monks choose to switch back and forth between the two, the rest of the time they take the normal -4 to hit.

Did I read that wrong?

Yes, you did.

Thanks Artoomis.

I tought that it was like Jeremy said because of the way it's written on page 39 of the PHB.

The way the PHB reads, it means that they can only deal subdual without penalty while grappling.

However, the errata for the PHB says to remove "while grappling" from that sentance.
