Quick need underwater adventure

Tinker Gnome

Adventurer
Okay, I am osrt of running a game about an hour from now(Well, a little more) and I need a quick underwater adventure. Some things of note are that they are basically in another dimension from that of the game world(Forgotten Realms) so this place where the adventure is is cut off frm everything.

The Pcs are as follows.

5th level Human Brabarian
5th level Dwarven Cleric of Gond
5th level human Wizard
5th level Tiefling Fighter/Rogue

Also is giving this group rings of Waterbreathing too much? Cause they woill kind of need them.

Another idea I had was to run an adventure in a volcano. but i do not have any idea for that one.

Sorry for bothering you all. This one just sort of snuck up on me.

What, just "giving" them rings of water breathing? What use is a water adventure if you make everything all nice and easy on them?

You have a wizard who can darn well buy a scroll of Water Breathing and scribe it into his book. Or they can purchase potions of water breathing.

If they want to go adventuring under water, they should have to figure out a way to do it on their own. No DM freebies.

yes, but then I will have them ranting at me about how it took too long, and they could not get what they needed. Not to mention they get out of control with too much free time. I just need an adventure. :)

Water breathing potions would not last long enough anyways.

When faced with a sudden need for an adventure, I find it helps to come up with an outline, then fill in some details. A basic outline that works well in a pinch (better options are available when you have more time to kill) is: PCs want to find X, are faced with challenges which hinder them in their journey. Old, cliched, but it works.

So, fill in the blanks: What is X that they need? Treasure? Magic? An artifact? Knowledge? A person?

Challenges can be fighting, so look up some appropriate CR underwater critters or adapt land beast to an underwater form (make 'em look different, have a different name, different flavor, but keep all the same stats. Convenience)

You can also have underwater naviagtion as a hinderance. Merpeople are a staple of underwater things, of course... always something to fall back on. C.S. Louis's Voyage of the Dawn Treader had a neat perspective on that sort of thing... the shallow waters are the calm places where towns or cities would be located, and then the deep valleys are where knights and such go to have adventures and win honor.

Pirates could also work. Underwater caves with air in them where treasure is stored... or a series of caves, neccitating swimming between them. Clues and directions and puzzles could be developed. How fast a thinker are you?

Just some thoughts.

Not very, it takes me a while to prepare. The pirates in a cave is a good idea though. I might not give WB rings to them, so they can putter around and I can think up some more stuff.

If you have Unearthed Arcana, transform the PCs into aquatic racial variants. If you have Manual of the Planes, temporarily give each PC the half-elemental (water) template. Or, kill them and have them return as undead. Perhaps bond them symbiotically with an aquatic species. Have an aboleth attack them with its mucus that grants water breathing. Turn them all into weresharks. Have fun! ;)

Dungeon magazine have an adventure that takes place in an fungus-infested part of the Underdark ( "Lord of the Scarlet Tide" #85"). There´s a abandoned Kua-Tua shrine where you can find a nice magic item called "Robe of the Deep" wich is very good. It allows you to breath underwater. It shouldn´t be to hard to make a side quest to obtain these robes or some variant of them.

i was so disapointed, the first time i read the topic I thought it said 'quick need underwear adventure' and ran in as fast as i could....only to find it's about water...darn

Well, it is sort of too late now. I had a small segment underwater. Due to some talking, they managed to get something to let them breathe underwater. Granted they kept telling me to hurry up and were complaining cause they were saying it was taking too long. So, I just made it short, just a close encounter with a Kraken and they had to fight some Kuo-Toa in five billion year old ruins.

For a plot twist, have the PCs discover that the certain "something to let them breathe underwater" became permanent and also prevents them from breathing anywhere except underwater. The players rushed you into an undersea adventure, now is your chance to get back at them. ;)
