Quick question of cursed tomes/manuals

If a tome/manual is read that is cursed with some kind of drawback how would the PC go about removing that curse?

It seems unbalanced to simple allow them to cast remove curse and get rid of the curse and keep the benefit.

I think the best solution would be allowing remove curse but it causes the PC to also loose the inherit ability bonus gained from the manul as well.

You don't have to allow Remove Curse to apply. As the description of the spell says, "Certain special curses may not be countered by this spell or may be countered only by a caster of a certain level or higher."

I would call that a definate drawback to such a curse. I wouldn't call it illogical at all to consider the "bonus" of the book as being connected to the curse. In that case, it would make perfect sense that the bonus is lost when the curse is removed (its not really a bonus, but a side-effect of the curse at that point).

I thought I remembered reading that only permanent magic items can be cursed... or is that intelligent? If it applied to cursed items as well, then a tome or manual couldn't be cursed, since its magic can only be used once.

Only permanent items can be intelligent.
The same rule does not apply to cursed items.

You could require an opposed caster check, a greater remove curse or a break enchantment.

What's the goal here? Is the tome supposed to be cursed in a way that can't be gotten around, or is it beneficial and just a challenge to overcome in the process of gaining the benefits?

The reason I'm asking is that:
1) I am curious
2) I randomly generated in my last game a cursed tome that one of the players read.
