Quicken Spell

Just another in my line of stupid questions (sure to get longer and longer):

Can a Sorcerer use the Quicken Spell Meta-Magic feat?

If the casting time is increased to 1 full round, but the quickened spell is supposed to be a free action, how does this work for the sorcerer and bard? Looks like it would be a useless feat for them.

yes, unless you also took a feat like Arcane Preparation, which allows sorcerers and bards to prepare spells ahead of time (FRCS)

Under normal circumstances it is useless to sorcerers and bards.

If you use the Arcane Preperation feat from FRCS, you can prepare a Quickened spell ahead of time and cast it as a free action later.

Some DM's allow you to "learn" a spell in metamagic form, as a seperate spell that takes up one of your "known spell" slots, and does not take any additional time to cast.

So you would have magic missile as a 1st level known spell, and Quickened magic missile as a 5th level known spell. This is a house rule though.

Too bad. I kinda liked the idea of a sorcerer just flinging off the odd free-action spell every now and then. I guess with all their spells per day, that would be a little too powerful though:eek:

I think a lot of people house rule it so that sorcerers can just use quicken spell as per usual. At +4 levels, I've rarely found a time when I've actually wanted to use it with my sorcerer even though I get to choose the situation and spell on the fly.

I know of only one person who allows this-- counting you. That doesn't qualify as "a lot" in my book. ;)

If my sorcerer PC could beneift from Quicken Spell, he'd probably use it at least once in every serious combat. Quickened Haste in the first round would be a great tactical advantage. As it is, he'll have to wait 'til epic levels, when Automatic Quicken Spell becomes available.

While I don't use the rule, I do remember fleets of people saying they would use that house rule way back in the day when this was discussed more frequently and actually being answered by people like the sage. Now people may have changed their minds, but I don't think it is a uncommon house rule. I almost never take quicken spell on NPC wizards i make or PC wizards I make. The +4 levles makes it fairly weak for the vast majority of spells out there, haste probably being the notable exception.

I don't really know people who use that varient, either; I know a lot of people who use the 'sorcerer may learn it as a pre-metamagiced spell', though. I don't, but would consider it if asked.
