Quicken Spell

The quicken spell description says that it can't be used on a spell whose casting time is more than 1 full round. Then it says that you can't use this feat with spontaneous casting since applying a metamagic feat to a spontaneously cast spell automatically increases the time to a full-round action.

Huh? The spell still wouldn't be over 1 full round. Why can't you do this?

Also, is Shot on the Run a useful feat? For all the prerequisites, it doesn't seem so.

Thanks,

Nick

The spontaneous explanation is for sorcerer's. They can use any metamagic feat at any time but to do so makes the spell turn from 1action casting time to 1 full round. Pretty balanced to be able to empower anything you can empower anytime you want.

If quicken spell worked in the same matter a sorcerer who took the feat could quicken ANY spell he had that could be quickened as a free action. That would be insane compared to a wizard having to prepare a slot for a quicken spell. And the fact that a sorcer can cast 5 of the higher level spell per day means 5 quickened spells without thought. It would unbalance the game and make sorcerer's insanely powerful.

If you want to move and shoot and move then shot on the run is huge. You can't do that normally so if you moved and shot you are stuck there while a guy comes up and whacks you. This way you can still attempt to get out of the way.

Well they did it because they screwed up IMO.

1st there's no good reason why a sorceer shouldn't be able to quicken if a wizard can.

2nd quicken sucks so bad anyways they could give it as a free bonus feat to sorcerers and let it work for them and it wouldn't alter the balance of things.

Still +4 spell levels, still sorcerers can't use it. Yeah for not having time to playtest metamagic enough, so things still are dumb.

Actually, there is. A sorcerer has more raw firepower than a wizard. That's his advantage. The wizard's advantage is flexibility.

Quicken Spell does not suck. It's a powerful feat; in 3.5 it's the only way you can cast more than one spell in a single round. That gives it great value.

As always, rule zero is your friend.

So it's just a balance thing with spontaneous casting then. Okay, the actual rules explanation didn't make sense to me.

Thanks sithramir!
