All the sprites now have "No coins; 50% goods; 50% items". The brownie has "50% coins, 50% goods, standard items, plus masterwork short sword and masterwork artisan's tools"

i'll go with the brownie model then, since the quicklings definitely had coins before. :) and that brings up a good point - should they get masterwork daggers?

Advancement: By character class

or "2-3 HD (Tiny) or by character class" ?

A brownie is the same height and weighs 6 pounds. I'd go with 4-5 because that super metabolism has to result in some weight loss. :D

plus, they're rather thin - 4 pounds it is!

FWIW, a brownie can use any of the following, each once a day as a 7th-level caster: confusion (DC 15), dancing lights, daylight, dimension door, protection from evil, ventriloquism (DC 12).

caster level 7th? or higher or lower depending on how powerful the brownie is relative to the quickling? were you thinking of tacking any of those other SLAs on?

Shade said:
If we follow the displacer beast's lead, no caster level is needed.

indeed! the only thing caster level modifies for blur is the duration, and that won't matter much if it's constant. ;)

Note that what you have listed is Improved Uncanny Dodge. Rogue level 4 higher is the standard, so 5th-level rogue for both.

i copied that straight from the astral deva. want to reduce the ability or should we call it Improved Uncanny Dodge?

Do we want to utilize any of this?

"Skills: Brownies have a knack for working with their hands, and they gain a +2 racial bonus on all Craft checks. Most brownies also carry masterwork artisan's tools, and they gain a +2 bonus on checks with the Craft skill for which the tools are made (included in the numbers given above). Brownies have keen senses and receive a +2 racial bonus on Listen and Spot checks. Brownies use their Dexterity scores for Climb checks."

i don't see why we couldn't. i can't see why quicklings wouldn't be less crafty than other fey (although i didn't assign any ranks to craft, we could change that). we could give them the keen senses part, instead of or in addition to Alertness. we could also give them the Climb mod, which would make sense as well with their cat-like reflexes (note that cats get the same deal for Climb).

Blur (Su): A quickling's form is distorted and blurred, as if under the effects of a blur spell (caster level Xth), providing a quickling with concealment (20% miss chance)
Do we want to restrict the Blur to be only when it's in motion? An unconscious quickling, for example, shouldn't be blurred. Likewise, a quickling that is hiding might not benefit from Blur.

At the very least, I think we should clarify where the Blur comes from, e.g.:

Blur (Su): A quickling moves so fast that it's form is blurred as if under the effects of a blur spell (caster level Xth), providing the quickling with concealment (20% miss chance)

Quicklings should always be blurred, even when they're not moving. Because it's cooler that way. And it's a supernatural effect, regardless. If it makes you feel better, you can just think of it as them twitching constantly. ;)

Also, I agree that they should have masterwork weapons. But I don't think it should be daggers. A tiny dagger does a d2 of damage. Give them something heftier. A short sword or even a rapier, say. Yes, that's a d3. But it's the principle of the thing!

Demiurge out.

with a -2 to the damage, d3 is no different than d2. ;)
OK. Fine. A rapier would give a better critical range. So they could actually do some damage every once in a while.

It also gets 'em closer to the duelist prestige class. ;)

I wish they had a light weapon in the scimitar/falchion tree.

I agree that the blur ability should be explained that it comes from their constant motion, and I also agree that it should always be active, since a quickling is probably never capable of truly being "at rest" while it lives (even while sleeping I picture involuntary motion, like a dreaming puppy).

Masterwork rapiers? Sure. ;)

The HD advancement is probably unnecessary. Most fey advance by character class nowadays.

The blur is slimming.

7th should be fine. Ventriloquism might be cool, as they could throw their voice, then run 240 feet in the opposite direction. ;)

Nosir.

Go with "Improved UD".

I definitely like the Climb bonus. I like keen sense rather than Alertness. I just realized that the brownie has Dodge as a bonus feat, so why not drop Alertness, make Dodge a bonus feat, and add a new non-bonus feat?

Also, note this:

Hide in Plain Sight (Ex): In areas of dim light, tall grass, or heavy undergrowth, a brownie can make itself practically invisible. Under these conditions, a brownie can use its Hide skill even while being observed and without having anything to actually hide behind.

Wanna reconsider giving 'em HiPS?
