Quintessential Rogue OGC?

Quick question. While reading through the old Q. Rogue, I'm going over the Open Game Content list. "All game mechanics and statistics derivattive of Open Game Content and the System Reference Document are to be considered Open Game Content."

So for example the Tomb Raider, would the background information be closed while the requirements, calss skills, and class features be open?

Mongoose was asked this on the ogl-l mailing list and their response was "if you want to know what's OGC, ask us."

Okay, Mongoose, consider this an 'official' asking. ;)

They (Matt) were also informed that the OGL does not allow such tactics. OGC is to be "clearly indicated", not discovered through private mail conversations.

I think Matt finally gave in and said something like: "OK, let's make it all OGC then!"

I haven't seen anything in their products or on their website regarding this change of heart, though.

Still waiting...

Well, let's debunk this one immediately. Matt did NOT say that about the entire product line. It was limited to their Ultimate Book of Feats (and possibly their Ultimate Prestige Classes book too - though not explicitly mentioned in his post linked to below, it too has Cut&Pasted material) books as it was pointed out that in re-using open material, they had to leave the material open - which their OGC designation didn't quite do.

Here is the post in question on the OGF-L archives.

He also mentioned in the same area that Mongoose was in fact re-working their OGC designation and that the "new" designation would later be unveiled...

I haven't seen anything in their products or on their website regarding this change of heart, though.
And neither have I.

To his credit, if you contact him privately via e-mail, he is usually okay with opening stuff that is "not open" and "does not have to be open."

Their OGC designations aren't the best, but that can be corrected - and Matt's a very nice guy - and funny. He probably doesn't remember me, but I met him at the GAMA show (I think I greeted him with, "how's the punching bag?") -- and heard lots of fun stories about him from other folks. ;)

Well I'm glad to hear that Mongoose is open to dialog on opening up material.

That does nothing for this specific question though.

Thanks for the replies and interesting tid-bits.

Looking forward to the answer.

Yours truly,

JGK

As evidenced in our books, where OPEN CONTENT appears at the bottom of the page containing the requirements, class skills, and features-- as it appears at the bottom of every page that is Open Content.

Seemed a good approach to clear designation-- though admittedly the smaller format of our books allowed us this luxury in layout.
