If you were going to select a normally evil race and have several members of that race turn out to be good – as a surprise for the PCs – which race would you choose? It can’t be the drow, they are over exposed – and to riff on the OotS joke, they are all good now any way. But what other race would you choose for this kind of twist?

noble savage orcs
reform the system from within goblin spies
grandmotherly hags
sensitive, misunderstood simple-minded trolls/ogres/giants etc (think Lenny, not Shrek)

I've used good aligned Ogre Magi a couple of times.

They are intelligent enough for players to believe the alignment shift, but at the same time intelligent enough to try to deceive the players and the players know it. It works well when you're trying to keep the players guessing.

In my games, orcs are usually LE, sometimes LN or straight N, probably more often than the players realize. I'm not sure why orcs switched from LE to CE between editions anyhow.

I've had some LN and even LG lizard men.

Goblins I play as self-interested evil, not destroy the world evil. My players get along fairly well with a goblin merchant who crosses between human and goblinoid society. I think he's NE, but I forget.

Kobolds, I could definitely see too. Meepo the Good!

To me, gnolls are the most evil of the humanoids . . . I'll had goblins hold people for ransom, but gnolls . . . yeah, better to fight to the death against them, 'cause you don't wanna know.

i think hags would be a good surprise, but they have indeed been mentioned already.

aside from that...beholders maybe? or aboleths?

To be Good? Hmm. I'd have to think on that one. I've done orcs and gnolls as neutral before, but not so much good, per se.

Oh, I've got it!

Yuan-ti.

Ooh, and maybe Cloakers. Cloakers are alien enough as it is, but having them be really alien and at the same time not evil would be worthwhile, I think.
