Races of Destiny

This looks interesting. Apparently the Races of The Wild book will be postponed in favor of the Races of Destiny book. It will cover all of the races of "man." Half-elves, half-orcs, half-ogres, half-giants. I wonder if this means that we finally will get the mul back. I love those half-dwarfs from Dark Sun.

*Crosses fingers* :)

I'm glad. Half races are more interesting than the Elves and Halflings.

Yeah. I like the half-bloods better too. I think it could be an interesting concept to have a dawn of an era-campaign with no pure-bloods (except man) left in the world. The bad guys would be half-goblins. :]

Eh. I've always found the idea of half-human races kinda dumb. Are humans just the hoochies of the multiverse or something? Would YOU have sex with an orc? If you were a big bad ogre, would you want to have sex with some puny human? How would that even work? As for the "bandit rape" theory I refuse to believe entire races are the result of random sexual assaults.

I mean, half-elves I could see at least happening once in a great while (I forget which world has them as a separate race that only breeds true amongst themselves - I like that idea a lot). And muls and half-giants at least make some sense in the context of Dark Sun. But a whole book on one-in-a-million reproductive flukes is just weird - unless they give you some compelling ways to make them more common in your setting, that is.

I have to agree with TW on this one...why is it that humans can breed with anything, but the other races can only breed with humans? Are humans the sluts of the cosmos? What's so great with the human's DNA that makes them so versatile? Why can't a Orc rape an Elf woman and produce offspring, if the elf and orc can mate with a human but not each other...that's a problem.

What someone needs to do is come up with a book of possible races of many different combinations, so we can see a half-orc and half-elf, or half-ogre and half-dwarf, or halfling and gnome, or half-minotaur and half-drow...why is it just the humans that get all that fun.

Well, humans make for about 90% of the population of humanoids. That might explain some of it. Moreover since humans are so diverse and have such wide array of preferences, I don't see why there couldn't be humans who'd jump at the chance to mate with an orc, for example. Especially since the offspring will turn out super strong.

But the most common expanation is that half-breeds are the product of deranged wizards (Saruman for instance) with the purpose of creating a warrior race, or some such. I.e. mating with giants won't be necessary as they are conceived invitro. -And you need a race for them as the wizard pumps out armies of them.

Actually, yes. They're vibrant, dynamic, adaptable, and incredibly slutty.

Is this post based entirely off the following announcement on the ENWorld news page?

TSR 17928 D&D Races of the Wild HC has been postponed. TSR 17737 D&D Races of Destiny HC will be released instead. Races of Destiny covers all of the races of "man." Half-elves, half-orcs, half-ogres, half-giants. The MSRP is $29.95. The street date for Races of Destiny is December 17th.

Note that there's no official source offered for this announcement, and whoever it is doesn't seem to be aware that TSR's not around anymore.

Where's the link for the announcement/info about this book? Personally, I was looking forward to Races of the Wild, and am hoping it's not postponed. I'd rather not have humans reproducing with everything under the sun..though this could still be an interesting book.

Well, the book is still up on the 2004 products on the WotC site, with the item code 179280000. Leaves a few interpretations.

Banshee: Look here.
