Raise Dead Issues

First Post
So... we converted to 3.5. In the first session the party had a casualty. Time for a raise dead.

Eep! It takes 5000 gp of diamond dust. Well the party ain't carrying that around.

So playing City of Spider Queen, the closest town is Dagger Falls.

It has a purchase limit of 3kgp!

So do you think they can purchase smaller chunks of diamond dust to make up the full 5k? If so should I limit the smaller chunks? And if so how?

Do you think that this just a limitation on Raise Dead put in specifically to make it harder to achieve? If they went to some place like Hillsfar they could easily purchase it, but that is quite a ways away and the module definately has a time element to it.

So what do you think?

Realistically, if you want the PC to be raised, then cut them a break and let them put together the cash to raise him/her. Especially this time around, given that the 3.0 to 3.5 conversion has caught them offguard.

Personally, I'd be enforcing the 3k purchase limit in Dagger Falls the next time this happens, but I'd let them purchase diamond dust from a variety of sources if they have the time to bounce from small town to small town.

If they're at a level where they can raise dead, they can probably also teleport. The world is a small place for a high-level D&D party.

so the party makes an intentional failure on an appraise check.;)

yeah, this diamond dust really is worth 5k...and i have the bill of sale to prove it.

If they are in an underdark area then they cannot teleport as it is limited to a mile or two and the only safe way to go anywhere is dimension door.

However, since the most common uses of diamond dust is probably things like stoneskin where its 500gp's worth. Perhaps each member could find "2 doses" of stoneskin stuff which is under the 3k gp price in different locations of the city and thus being able to bring enough together to have 5k gp worth. I'd allow that for now but remind them to be more prepared next time.

The smartest thing to do is create a scroll using the material components ahead of time or paying xp penalties in its place to get the spell on a scroll. It then can be acarried around and there'd be no problem.

One of the listed options was going to Dagger Falls, which is not in the Underdark, last I checked.

Hmm... stoneskin has that as a component? They just killed an NPC wizard who cast Stoneskin... what are the chances he might have 2k gp worth of diamond dust on him for additional castings? =)

That way they can buy 3k in town, and be set if they need to cast the spell. From that point on, they will need to get it off of the MANY npc wizards they are facing. Or even the NPC clerics. Man... this means I need to go look up what spells need special materials so I can start sprinkling them throughout the game.

They do have access to a wizard with Teleport, problem is that the wizard is not IN the group. They have no PC wizard. They are about to get a Cohort wizard to help make up for the loss, but she is only 8th level wizard... so no teleporting.

So teleport would be a hard option to work with, as they would have to get a message to the wizard which is off site.... the cleric might be able to do that (if I remember there is a spell that lets clerics do that...).

Still it would take time and coordination. They lack in both areas. :D

The gp limit is for a single item, you're actually supposed to use the 'total wealth' figure for the available amount of any particular (plural) item. If it was a single 5000gp diamond they'd be SOL, but pouches of diamond dust can be aggregated until they have enough.
