Raising Unwilling Dead

That is called speak with dead.

Why not just try the raise? Give the player the option to say yes. I said yes when the bad guys raised my wizard, and ultimately, uhh, well, I don't play that wizard anymore.

At any rate, just try it by the book. Raises are not cheap, and many players would jump at the chance.

The player has made it clear he doesn't want to come back. That's what prompted this line of reasoning.

Then there is no way you can force his character to do so - not per the rules. The rules aren't limited to raise dead or resurrection it says revivication (which covers a broad range of areas).

Pretty much you are stuck with the speak with dead methods. Anything else is absolutely messign with the player by "forcing" his PC to do something (essentially taking the PC away from him).

A soul knows the name, alignment, and patron deity (if any) of the character attempting to revive it and may refuse to return on that basis.

Nothing stops the bad guys from forcing a good-aligned cleric to raise the character. All the character would know is that Joe-Blow, a LG cleric of Willbo the Righteous wants to raise him.

Yeah, I see that. That's why I'm wondering about turning him into an intelligent undead, which could be just as effective.
