Rakanar, the life of an Imp

Wippit Guud

First Post
Lets see what I can do with this. I'm good with character concepts, but not so good with storytelling, but I'd figure I'd give it a go. This is the story of Rakanar, an imp who was a familiar, and is now free to choose his own path. Level progression will be 1 every 5 years, with no set ending, cause imps can live a long time... depending on where I take the story, he may live a little, or a while.

Anyways, enjoy, and I hope I do my "life of" predecessors justice. :)

Rakanar arrives on the Prime Material plane when he was summoned from the hells and made the familiar to a most unlikely spellcaster - a halfling necromancer. His master, Iarl Afen, lived in a small village of 500 in an area of small rolling hills, outwardly appearing as a lexicographer. Secretly, however, Iarl devled into the darker arts, spending coutless nights in a hidden cellar of his modest home developing his necromantic arts.

Rakanar quickly came to dislike his master. The combination of halfling cheerfullness when coupled with the gruesomness of his chosen art caused the imp several headaches. Listening to him sing a halfling wedding song as he sawed the hands of a child's corpse was a lot even for a devil. But the bond of master and familiar was strong, and beyond these quirks, Rakanar came to admire the small halfling, even if he didn't have much of a taste for undead.

One moonless night, that all changed, however. Iarl and Rakanar were in the cellar, with the former was trying a new, more powerful spell, and ended up summoning a shadow. Unfortunately, Iarl lacked the power to control his new visitor, and several minutes later, a halfling-sized shadow replaced the now-former necromancer. Rakanar took the opportnity to turn invisible, and the halfling left with his new master, leaving behind a freed imp.

Rakanar spent several hours going through his master's hut, discovering what few items of note remained. Seeing potential in this new opportunity, he took to studying the halflings spell-book, and small Blessed Book with a few meager spells. Not wanting to go the way of undead, Rak decided to focus on enchantment, the one school his master didn't look to. Controlling people appealed to the tiny outsider, and outside the door was an entire village just ripe for the taking over.

Rakanar very quickly relized that being an imp was limiting the scope of what he could do. Laid out before him was a halfling village, ripe to be dominated, but if he couldn't fit in as a member of the community, he would eventually be discovered and the people would rise against him. With his limited powers he could take other shapes, but none would be a halfling. After weeks of thought, he came up wioth a bold plan.

As he exploed the town village invisibly, he discovered a halfling girl who shy and not well off. Using his charm and suggestion powers, and not actually revealing himself, he managed ton convince the girl that he was a guardian angle and was concerened about her well being. He began to teach her about how to act around others, how be to liked and accepted, she took readily to these instructions. In time, she even starting dating, and after a few years, settled down with a halfling man.

Once she became pregnant, Rakanar moved onto stage 2. Contacting a group of goblins some miles away, he convinced them to perform a small task for him. Using a few easy change self spells and an enlarge to appear roughly like his wife, he was led into an ambish and slaughtered by the goblins. Rakanar took enough care to ensure that the village would discover this, and that the culprits were easily identifyable. In this way, the villagers would become wary of their surrounding, installing a little fear that was necessary for the future.

Of more immediate concern, the halfing girl - named Violet - gave birth to a healthy son. True to his guardian angel persona, Rakanar watched over the two halflings, using some enchantment to get benefits for them from the rest of the village. He needed that baby to grow strong.

Because, when the time was right, he inteded to replace him.

Wow, an interesting beginning for the story... so you plan to continue his life indefinitely, or until you run out of ideas? Cool.

I have an ending semi-planned, but dunno how feasable it is, or when it will happen. Just gotta see where the story takes me :)

It has been a busy 5 years, but the fruits of Rakanar's labors are starting to take shape.

The imp kept in contact with the goblin tribe that was employed to kill off a helpless halfling, helping them build up their warriors and train their shamans. He emphasized that outright destroying the village would serve no purpose, that to have the best warriors, they must constantly hone their skills against an improving opponent. So instead of all-out assaults, the goblins began quick skirmishes every couple of months, striking and pulling back after inflicting a few casulties.

Back in the town, Rakanar used his magic from afar to give heart to the town council, strengthening their reslove not to be defeated. A militia was raised and trained diligently to repel the goblins, and the town's population began to rise when refugees from outlying farms and small hamlets began arriving. The beginnings of Rakanar's plans began to take hold.

Of more imediate concern was Violet and her now 4 year old son. She was a good an attentive parent, bringing up a well behaved and strong boy. At her guardian angel's insistance, she began to learn herbal medicine, and became a healer of sorts for the town, caring for the aches and pains of the small battles. It was one of those battles which would change her family forever.

After the latest and most brutal attack by the goblins, Violet was needed to tend for the injured, leaving her son sleeping peacefully in his bed. Rakanar appeared to him, disguised as a small angel, and told him he was a friend. He led the boy out of the hut and into a forest a few short miles away. There they came upon a small altar to Asmodeus. There he revealed his true form to the boy, terrifying him to his soul. The boy lost control of his will, bu\oth from fear and from the power of Rakanar's suggestion, and climbed upon the altar. With the mon ecliped by a growing storm, the imp addresed the devil Asmodeus, giving him the soul of this halfling boy in exchange for the promise of more power to come. As lightning flashed, Rakanar's barbed tail plunged through the halfling's chest, stopping his heart and sending his soul to the arms of evil.

Hours after midnight, Violet returned to her hut, and checked on her precious boy, finding him safe and sound in his bed. She retired to her own bed, leaving him to sleep, and not seeing the smile that crossed his face.

I have come up with an ending to the story, looks like it'll be 100 years of Rakanar, taking him to level 20 (ECL 28, I believe). Again, I don't know how feasible the last chapter will be, because there's no rules for what Rak's going to do.
