D&D 5E Ranged attack into melee

Ok, I know I had the answer to this but can't find it now. A PC fires into melee so his allies are cover. But you miss can you hit allies? Where is it covered in th PHB or DMG?

I think the rules you are looking for are about Cover: PHB 196, DMG 251, 272.
