Hey everyone. I play a level 7 ranger (archer). We are about to start a campaign that will take us through level 10. My DM asked us to make a wish list of gear that we would like to see throughout this campaign. I am curious to see what fellow rangers think are the good pieces of gear in the 7-11 level range.

Thanks in advanced!

I'm currently playing a 12th bow elven ranger, so I think I can assist.

Go with elf. They are by far the best bow rangers. Your two main stats Dex and Wis of course. Aim for Sylvan Archer Paragon Path. That +wis to quarry damage at 16th level beats all other options.

As for items, if your DM allows the Wintertouched/Lasting Frost feat combo, grab a Frost Bow +2 (PHB) and Gloves of Ice (AV2) when you can. If not, grab the Sure Shot gloves (AV1) and keep in mind the 18th level Serpent's Kiss bow for the future (AV2 page 131).

Armor: Predator's Hide +2 (AV2). When it'll be +3 it'll really start making a difference.

Arms: Bracers of Archery +2 (AV1).

Feet: Boots of Striding (PHB) or my fave, Boots of the Fencing Master (AV1). You're an elven ranger, shifting is your schtick.

Thanks in advanced!

Advanced what? Advanced Dungeons & Dragons?

:D

For your neck item I always like the Cloak of Distortion (-5 penalty on attack rolls from attacks against you from further than 5 squares). Great item for a ranged PC (unless you're playing in a super tight quarter dungeon, but that's not really 4e)

Not to be too harsh, but to be a more interesting class? I'd take a few interesting items and maybe a multiclass for some variety. Obviously the standard magic bow/armor combo is good, but how about multiclassing in to a spellcaster or the like. Bard would be fun for the encounter Jinx Shot, but it's not really that effective when you're twin-striking all over the place.

Still, becoming a diplomat might be fun for non-combat time. Another idea, if allowed, is Monk multiclass. That would give you chance to move up in to melee on accasion and suck up some damage to disperse it better through the party's resources. Slide up in a karate some unsuspecting 'fo(e). That could be a lot of fun, but probably needs some tatoos or teh like to boost attack bonus a bit to make it worthwhile.

I just find archer rangers terribly boring with so many interesting classes and abilities out there now. I tried one once and ended up doctoring the heck out of it before finally going a different direction.

if your DM has access to DDI or Adventurer's Vault 2, there is some magic ammunition in there, so your arrows could explode with fire or cause the target to be slowed by ice, etc.

Too true... ;)

re: magical ammo, it is cool but very expensive for one shot items.

That's the beauty of this game, there are so many different types of things to be. What's boring for you could be extremely fun for someone else. I personally have a ton of run playing an archer ranger. Dealing out good damage to help my teammates all while dancing around keeping enemies away from me.

I am just asking for opinions on gear to see what other rangers think are good pieces of gear and why. Thanks. :)

Cloak of Distortion is your winner. For an archer ranger it is easily overpowered in my opinion. You always want to be able to maneuver about the field safely, so items to complement this are nice. I personally wouldn't recommend damage boosting items unless there's simply nothing else. You'll deal good damage regardless.

Instead I'd recommend you focus on other things like saving yourself from bad situations. Items that grant teleportation incase you're cornered. Items that help with saving throws are ideal since you're more likely to be hit by caster creatures than melee ones. If you're an elf, consider the wildrunners boots in Adv Vault 1 to increase your run speed further. These are amazing with the paragon feat and PHB1 that takes away your attack penalty when running.
