I don't mind the 3E version of the ranger.

My Dwarven ranger is 2nd level and I am looking forward to take him to bigger and better enemies.

I like the Ranger because it has great skills and combat prowess.

It's the ultimate first level class because you can account for the years spent brawling and fighting while learning how to survive in the mean city streets (and the flight to the forests outside).

I like 3e Ranger, especially Dwarven Ranger (Caver). Single class Rangers are rare around me, too. But so as single class Fighters. Also, not so many multi classed Rangers are Ranger 1/Someting X here. Maybe the most popular combination is Ranger X/Fighter 4+. IMHO Listen and Spot skills are so critical in this edition and a class which have both skills as class skill and have full BAB is great without question.

I was discussing something like this with a friend last night and we came up with the following:

  • Barbarian/Fighter. Feats and abilties, with few skills.
  • Monk. Higher AC.
  • Paladin. Healing and special abilties.
  • Ranger. Skills.

These are what you play the class for. I prefer the PHB Ranger as a concept. It seems that the majority of players I have spoken to, dislike it because it has weak class abilties. Well, Ranger has the best skill choice/points than the other classes.

I like Rangers in all their variations, but I'm biased. This has long been my favorite class, despite all its inherent problems and deficiencies. I genuinely enjoy other classes, but the Ranger will always hold a special place in my heart.

As for the PHB Ranger, it's a bit underpowered and overly confining IMHO, which is why I've enjoyed tinkering with the various alternate options. I most enjoy the presentations that offer a few optional tracks for the virtual feats.

I've got no real problem with the ranger, and I played one for about a month and a half until she was killed by a lightning bolt. I didn't use her two weapon abilities at all. As far as variants go I occasionally use TOWER's variant.
