[Rant] Do editing/proofreading errors drive you mad, too?

Okay, I'm no idiot. Please consider this an open call for editors/proofreaders. Anyone in this thread who is willing to sign a nondisclosure agreement and work for comp copies of PDF products, and compliments, speak right up. I'll watch this thread, but you can also e-mail me through the forum or contact me directly by e-mail at: editor (at) tabletopadventures (dot) com .
Well, I'm no professional, but I do consider my English and cognitive skills to be above average, so count me in. :)

Great! It would be helpful if you would send me your e-mail address, but if you prefer I can contact you through the forum.

Now, that's thinking ahead, that is.

Three of the four mistakes in there were planted. But we all just blithely assume that all four were deliberate, and we'll never know that he wouldn't have got it all right (or, if you prefer, 10)% accurate) if he'd wanted to... :D

It's like watching a magician at work!

What if these companies did take a long, hard look at their priorities, and then decided on a level of proofreading they could actually afford instead of a level of proofreading that might have made all their readers happy but the company broke?
Then I imagine they will soon me out of business. There are a number of companies that did just this, and they're mostly gone now.

Charging premium prices for a gaming book means you're a business, and a business gets held to basic quality control standards.

Now the thing is, there are many small publishing companies that put together their products on a shoestring budget, and I'll cut them significantly more slack. Heck I'll buy their product even with editing problems, because I support the industry. Once you start publishing large, full color hardback books, and charging $40 and up, you're no longet that shoestring company.

The worst thing is that some of these small companies that are putting out products on the thinest of margins actually have better QC than the medium sized companies, or even the big guys like WotC or White Wolf.

That's sad.

This company had 20 full-time employees? Then it would have been a giant in the RPG industry! There are exactly two RPG companies that have 20 or more employees: White Wolf and Wizards of the Coast. That's it.

Really, the number of RPG companies that have more than one full-time employee is pretty small.

Woah! That means there's like three or four people at Paizo who aren't actually employed by Paizo? Are they squatters? Hobos come in from the street seeking warmth? Hmmmm...

(AKA: Paizo's got more than 20 employees!)

I heard a rumour that that Mona cat is living out of his trunk. ;)

OSRIC v1.00 was largely edited by unpaid people. Actually, very largely by one unpaid person.

When I told him about the wordcount for the revised edition, he politely backed out of v1.01, and I don't blame him at all. ;)

Any editors willing to proofread well over 100k words of text in British English, quickly, in return for a credit but no money at all? ;)

I've edited/proofread a couple of small published products and will gladly work for comp copies :)

You know, Green Ronin got the spelling of "foreword" wrong in their True20 core rulebook, too. Just thought I'd point that out.

Cheers,
Cam

One word for the whole book, and in a section I never saw? Not bad, huh? :D
