I had an almost identical situation (as the first post):
We settled in a wizard's tower full of portals. To activate the portals we needed a big crystal. We go to *god know where, probably sigil*, raid a temple of ilmater and put the big crystal in out portal device.
Luckily for us the dm didn't taunt us untill he had stopped that game, but we used a major artifact for that portal machine (which we didn't really use anyway)
