Actually, when facing Illithids, many knowledgable wizards
may assume they are projected and use dispel magic over
fireballs. If the wizard gets a hint he is facing the creatures,
always use detect invis and watch for cords to be sure. Thus,
the true rat bastard DM will not give anything away.. ;^)
Also, unless the party is stuck in a hallway, it is unlikely
the flayers will be able to continuously target the entire group.
They would segment their enemies or the battle field before
hand (possibly targetting a smaller number of enemies with
all of their blasts each round). YMMV.
