In short: loved it.

Animation is superior to the first, the jokes even snappier than the first's excellent writing, and while I was worried that it might suffer from character bloat with the introduction of Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots, his character was a riot. This is the most enjoyable, funniest movie I've seen so far this year.

It was a good movie, started out a little slow but really picked it up in the second half. They had great little jokes in there, most of a wider variety then the first. THe first is still better, but not by much. 4 stars

Shrek 2 rocketh mightily. Yes, I spent the first bit thinking "heh, that's funny... oh, I think they used a new graphics engine" and "Are their lips not quite synched up right", but it picks up really well. I did think that they sacrificed screen time with Fionna for Puss 'N Boots, but Antonio Banderas did a pretty good job. "For you, I could be". 'Nuff said. Had a real good music number and a darn funny climax to boot.

Technically speaking, the CG was really good. The rain effects were awesome, especially the water dripping down on Shrek's face at one point. Dreamworks hasn't perfected humans yet, but the look they have from Shrek 1 still works.

And for the inevitable comparrison between the first and the second... I think they're about equal. 2 didn't have quite the emotional effect of scenes like "Hallelujah" in it, but the strong finish made up for it. Still gotta love the way they break the old faerie tale stereotypes.

Oh, one last thing, what's with all the kids in the audience? Yeah, I know it's an animated show and all, but there was a good bit of innuedo and a lot of jokes that kids REALLY shouldn't have gotten.

My Thoughts exactly

I really enjoyed it too. Hundreds of sly references to other movies and in-jokes, but the movie is just as funny even if you don't recognize any of these. It was a lot of fun.

The hallmark of a good kids' film is one that the kids find funny, but which has jokes that shoot right over the tykes' heads and smack the adults' funny bones, too. :)

I'm hopefully going to see it this wekeend with my wife, time permitting. These reviews are good to know.
